Several of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies have voiced their continued support for Taiwan at the ongoing UN General Assembly debates. This year’s debates are being held virtually due to COVID-19.
Palauan President Tommy Remengesau Jr., in particular, delivered a strong endorsement of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. Remengesau said that Taiwan can help the world rise to the many challenges it now faces. He called on UN bodies to stop excluding Taiwan.
Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benitez also voiced his country’s support for Taiwan’s inclusion in UN bodies.
Separately, during a high-level meeting held to mark the 75th anniversary of the UN’s establishment, Marshall Islands President David Kabua said that Taiwan should be allowed to take part in organizations such as the WHO, the International Civil Aviation Organization, and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s foreign ministry says that Central American ally Honduras has chosen to express its support for Taiwan this year through a letter to the UN’s secretary-general that it delivered in August.
