The foreign ministry says that Taiwan will stand with the US against Chinese infiltration. The foreign ministry’s statement came Friday in response to a speech US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave at the Wisconsin State Legislature.
In his speech, Mike Pompeo said that China is attempting to undermine the US government by exerting pressure on state governments. In particular, Pompeo said that Chinese officials are directly obstructing individual states from establishing exchanges with Taiwan, and outright forbidding them from recognizing the country.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou thanked the US for its long-standing support for Taiwan. She said that Taiwan is familiar with Chinese attempts to subvert democracy. Ou said that Taiwan will strengthen its ties with the US and increase cooperation to stave off Chinese pressure.
