Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture says that two Taiwanese artists scheduled to perform at China’s National Day celebrations could face a fine of up to NT$500,000 (~USD$17,000).
Over the weekend news broke that two Taiwanese singers–Angela Zhang and Nana Ouyang–are scheduled to perform at a televised Chinese National Day celebration scheduled for September 30.
The culture ministry says that, by participating in the event, the two singers may be in violation of Taiwan’s law governing relations with China. The law states that Taiwanese citizens, civic groups, and institutions are not allowed to take up work with Chinese political parties or party affiliates without prior approval from a relevant government agency in Taiwan. Violators face potential fines of between NT$100,000 and NT$500,000
The culture ministry said that if Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council finds that Zhang and Ouyang are in violation of the law, then it will take swift action to punish the two.
The Mainland Affairs Council is Taiwan’s top China policymaking body.
