The foreign ministry says the government’s stance on safeguarding Taiwan’s sovereignty and protecting fishermen’s rights remains firm. That’s the word from Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Joanne Ou on Tuesday.
Ou’s comments came after a Taiwanese fishing boat collided with a Japanese government vessel in waters near the disputed Diaoyutai Islands on Sunday.
The Diaoyutai Islands in the East China Sea, also known as the Senkaku Islands in Japanese, are claimed by Taiwan, China and Japan.
Ou said Taiwan will take steps to address the issue after an investigation. That’s because the two sides have different interpretations of what actually happened.
Also on Tuesday, Premier Su Tseng-chang ordered the Fisheries Agency to investigate the matter.
