Taiwan on Monday received an apology from the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy for mistakenly classifying six Taiwan cities as belonging to China. The global coalition responded that the mistake was due to a ‘technical error’.
The six cities are Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung. They were found to be listed under the country classification of ‘China’ on the coalition’s website.
Following protests by the Taiwanese government and the six cities, the website changed the country classification to ‘Chinese Taipei’ on Sunday. ‘Chinese Taipei’ is the name originally used by the cities when they applied to enter the organization.
