Fifty US senators have signed a letter encouraging US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to begin negotiating a bilateral trade agreement with Taiwan.
The fifty senators represent half of the US Senate, and come from both major US political parties. The letter comes as Taiwan moves to ease restrictions on the import of US beef and pork products starting next year. Specifically, Taiwan will lift a ban on US beef from cattle 30 months and older, and a ban on US pork containing the leanness-enhancing additive ractopamine.
The foreign ministry has thanked the US Congress for demonstrating continued cross-party support for Taiwan. The Presidential Office has also thanked the US Congress for its positive reaction to Taiwan’s new import policies.
