It’s official! The Taipei 101 New Year’s firework show is still on!

Some good news from Taipei 101, the landmark skyscraper in downtown Taipei. The tower is the centerpiece of Taiwan’s most extravagant New Year fireworks display. And, despite the continued specter of COVID-19 elsewhere in the world, this year’s year-end display is still on.

Has 2020 felt like a slow descent into madness? Well, hold on just a few more months, because Taiwan is about to send the year off with a bang.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many cities around the world to cancel their New Year celebrations, but Taiwan’s success in keeping the pandemic at bay means that the festivities in Taipei can go ahead.

Many of the details have yet to be worked out: the team behind the Taipei 101 skyscraper’s year-end fireworks show held off on announcing whether the show would go on until earlier this week. This means that a design team hasn’t yet been chosen.

But what is known is that the fireworks display will be synchronized with a light show, as in the past few years. And it’s also been announced that the display will be kept at 300 seconds in length.

Hopefully the display will usher in a happier, less Kafkaesque year.
