The Council of Agriculture has unveiled a Taiwan pork logo to differentiate quality local products from imported ones.
The logo featuring a smiling golden pig and a green background also aims to ensure the public that Taiwanese pork is safe to eat.
On Tuesday, agricultural minister Chen Chi-chung urged restaurant owners, distributors and the retail sector to apply for the logo, beginning in November.
Chen said the pork logo will give consumers more options. That’s because Taiwan will import US pork products containing the leanness-enhancing feed additive ractopamine next January.
Imported products are barred from using the logo. Violators will be fined up to NT$4 million (US$133,000).
