Former President Lee Teng-hui has been laid to rest at a military cemetery on the outskirts of Taipei.
Lee died at the age of 97 in late July. He was Taiwan’s first democratically-elected leader. National flags at all government buildings have been flown at half-mast for a day in honor of the late leader.
President Tsai Ing-wen, Vice President William Lai, and other high-ranking officials attended Lee’s interment ceremony on Wednesday. In a Facebook post, Tsai said that people should bear in mind Lee’s wishes that democracy continue to deepen in Taiwan and that Taiwanese people stand in solidarity.
Lee was a devout Christian, and a minister with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan led a Christian service in Lee’s memory. He said that Lee had dedicated his life to Taiwan.
