Video: Amusement parks brace for huge long weekend crowds

Amusement park owners across Taiwan are seeing dollar signs. That’s because, along with all its other quirks, the year 2020 has put two long weekends right next to each other on Taiwan’s calendar. That means big crowds of guests. To sweeten the deal for potential visitors, Taiwan’s biggest parks are rolling out special offers and big discounts.

It’s just been a week since the long Mid-Autumn Festival weekend, and already, Taiwan is gearing up for a second long break, this time for National Day. This isn’t lost on Taiwan’s amusement parks, each of which is competing for a share of the holidaymaking crowd.

Many are offering deals that center on the number “ten”: for instance, bring a friend along and they only have to pay NT$10 to get in. This is because National Day is observed on October 10, or if you write out the date, 10/10. This has given the day its popular nickname “Double Ten Day”.

Some amusement parks, like Taipei Children’s Amusement Park, are likely to see 10,000 visitors a day. On Thursday, the day before the long weekend began, there were already big crowds getting an early start on the vacation.

It’s not just the north of Taiwan, though. LIHPAO Discovery Land and Janfusun Fancyworld in central Taiwan and E-DA Theme Park in the southern city of Kaohsiung are also preparing for a holiday rush.
