One soldier has died and another has been left injured after their tank crashed into an embankment and flipped over following a military drill. The accident happened Thursday afternoon in Kinmen County, a collection of outlying islands across the Taiwan Strait from Taiwan proper.
Taiwan’s army has set up a team to investigate the accident. Taiwanese media outlets have speculated that speeding may have been the cause.
On Friday morning, President Tsai Ing-wen expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased. She ordered the defense ministry to uncover the reason for the accident and explain its findings to the public.
