One of the performers at this year’s National Day celebrations in Keelung was the winner of a contest held by the Overseas Community Affairs Council. The government agency organized a Teresa Teng singing competition for overseas Taiwanese as a way of boosting participation in the festivities.
The winner – Huang Chong-li from Malaysia – is a student at Tainan University of the Arts. He beat out 215 other contestants to emerge victorious with his rendition of Teng’s “What do you have to say?”
The final round of the competition took place on October 7, with 15 finalists competing for the top spot. The winner not only got the chance to perform at the National Day celebrations, he also walked away with NT$100,000 (US$3,500).
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Teresa Teng’s death. The Taiwanese singer is widely loved in the Chinese-speaking community, and is often regarded as one of the most important singers in all of Asia.
