The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) says China’s attempts to use allegations of intelligence activities to threaten the Taiwanese people is despicable. The top China policy-making body made the statement Monday night.
The MAC was referring to two Taiwanese men whom China accused of espionage in separate incidents. One man is Lee Meng-chu who has been detained by China since last August. In a video broadcast by Chinese state media, Lee said he was a spy working for Taiwan.
But the MAC said that China was using illegal methods to force a Taiwanese citizen to acknowledge his "mistakes." The MAC said it is “malignant political manipulation to falsely incriminate a Taiwanese national for conducting espionage activities for Taiwan on a Chinese media outlet.”
Another incident involves Cheng Yu-ching, a scholar who used to be former DPP Chairman Cho Jung-tai’s aide. Cheng was arrested by China last April upon entry on suspicion of espionage.
On Tuesday, the foreign ministry said the trumped-up accusations violate human rights.
