Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council is warning citizens of the risk of traveling to China. That’s as China has detained and charged Taiwanese citizens with endangering its national security.
The Mainland Affairs Council says that China forced the Taiwanese citizens to confess to being spies on state television for three nights in a row this week.
On Tuesday night, China had both Tsai Chin-shu, the chairman of the South Taiwan Cross-Strait Relations Association, and retired professor Shih Cheng-ping “confess” to being spies. Both disappeared in China in 2018. The Mainland Affairs Council said on Wednesday that their activities in China had only been the normal collection of information and academic exchanges.
Mainland Affairs Council Deputy Minister Chiu Chui-cheng said, “We condemn Beijing authorities for trying to disrupt Taiwan society and their indecent behavior in trying to scare the public in Taiwan. The Mainland Affairs Council seriously warns the other side of the strait to stop these evil operations immediately. At the same time, we warn the public of the risks of participating in cross-strait exchanges.”
The council has also demanded that China give the detained their rights under the law and allow visitation by their families.
