Tsai outlines green energy strategy
President Tsai Ing-wen has highlighted the growth of Taiwan’s green energy sector and outlined her strategy for the sector’s future.

President Tsai Ing-wen has highlighted the growth of Taiwan’s green energy sector and outlined her strategy for the sector’s future. That was during an address at the opening of the 2020 Energy Taiwan trade show on Wednesday.

Tsai said that green energy is a core part of the government’s industrial policy programs and a prerequisite for meeting Taiwan’s goals for transforming its energy mix.

She said that in recent years, Taiwan has become a hot spot for international investment in green energy. She said that in 2025, the country’s green energy sector should be able to attract investment worth NT$1 trillion (US$34.8 billion). The year 2025 should also see the sector create 20,000 jobs and reach an output value of NT$1.2 trillion (US$41.8 billion).

Tsai said that progress in recent years has included the launch of Taiwan’s first offshore wind farm. She said that groups from Japan and South Korea came to Taiwan to learn from the project, something she said shows that Taiwan has taken the lead in Asia in terms of developing offshore wind energy. Tsai said that by 2025, this initial offshore wind farm will be joined by 14 others.

Tsai said that Taiwan will follow three development strategies in order to work towards becoming Asia’s center for green energy development. These are setting a clear long-term course in order to secure the confidence of long-term investors, planning a complete industry chain and ensuring that measures are in place, and ensuring a stable supply of green power.

Tsai said that because some big international firms require suppliers to use a certain percentage of green energy in their production, ensuring an adequate supply of green power will give Taiwanese companies access to these big firms and secure Taiwan’s important position in the global supply chain.
