Taiwan will attend the Tokyo Olympics if the event is held next year. In a report to the legislature on Monday, the head of Taiwan’s Sports Administration, Chang Shao-hsi, said that Taiwan will overcome any challenges standing in the way of its participation. He said that Taiwan’s attendance at the Olympics will not be contingent on what large countries, like the US and Canada, decide to do.

Chang says that Taiwan’s athletes are already well-versed in prevention protocols. That’s because a lot of them are participating in qualifying events, which already have strict prevention measures in place. Chang says that even if an athlete is diagnosed with COVID-19, Taiwan has protocols to guarantee the safety of other participants.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said that the Tokyo Olympics will take place in 2021. The event was originally scheduled to take place this year, but was postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Barring any further postponement, the Summer games are scheduled to take place next year, from July 23 to August 8.
