Consumers Foundation launches anti-ractopamine campaign
Civic groups hold a press conference protesting ractopamine (CNA)

The Consumers Foundation is launching an anti-ractopamine campaign. That’s as Taiwan gets ready to allow imports of US pork with ractopamine and beef from cattle 30 months old and under.

The foundation along with other civic groups announced the new campaign to refuse to eat pork with ractopamine, a leanness enhancing additive. They’ve launched a signature drive in an effort to make their voices heard.

National Parents Association and Campus Food Safety Committee Chairman Sun Wen-chang said that he witnessed the reaction of pigs and geese after they were given ractopamine. They grow very quickly while they are consuming the drug, but one or two dying out of 100 is normal. Sun said the drug is harmful to animals and humans. His concern over food safety is what drove him to help reform school lunch policies.

The Consumers Foundation and other civic groups also plan to begin demonstrations against ractopamine in November.
