President Tsai Ing-wen accepted the credentials of the new Nicaraguan ambassador to Taiwan, Mirna M. Rivera, on Monday morning.
At Monday’s ceremony, Tsai said that Rivera will be a valuable asset to Taiwan-Nicaraguan relations. She said that Rivera is a prime example of what the two countries can achieve when they work together.
President Tsai said that despite the pandemic, ties between Taiwan and Nicaragua have strengthened this year. Taiwan has imported a record amount of seafood from the Central American country. Taiwanese businesses have also made headway into the Nicaraguan market, thanks to the efforts of both governments. President Tsai said that the two countries have also signed a postal agreement which will lower shipping costs between the two countries.
Rivera shared greetings from Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Murillo. She said that Nicaragua is eager to continue bolstering ties with Taiwan.
Rivera refers to Taiwan as her second home, having graduated from Ming Chuan University in Taipei. She said she is a proud recipient of a Taiwan government scholarship, and that she will work to improve education, culture and diplomatic ties.
