Fifty-one year-old man falls ill after receiving flu vaccine
A string of deaths connected to a flu vaccine in South Korea has Taiwan worried about inoculations administered within the country

A fifty-one year old man has fallen ill in Taiwan, ten days after receiving a flu vaccine. The man was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nervous system.

Current research suggests that there is no connection between the disorder and  the vaccination. However, this latest development follows news that 48 people have died in South Korea after receiving imported flu vaccines from French pharmaceutical company Sanofi. Taiwan also sources Sanofi vaccines, causing some to speculate that inoculations result in complications.

The deputy head of Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Chuang Jen-hsiang, says that the case involving the fifty-one year old man is still under investigation. He says the man could have gotten Guillain-Barré syndrome from another source.
