The head of Taiwan’s National Security Bureau (NSB), Chiu Kuo-cheng, says the United States will continue to deepen ties with Taiwan following the election of former Vice President Joe Biden. Chiu was speaking with reporters before a budgetary hearing at the legislature on Monday.
International leaders have congratulated Biden and his running mate Senator Kamala Harris, whose election numbers surpassed incumbent President Donald Trump’s over the weekend.
Chiu says that the United States was likely to continue to distance itself from China, no matter who won the election. He says that he expects Taiwan-US ties to continue to thrive.
Chiu says that when it comes to relations with China, Taiwan must first be able to fend for itself diplomatically, before relying on others. He says that Taiwan cannot afford to become politically dependent on any other country.
When asked whether Biden’s win will affect Taiwan’s US policy, Chiu said the government remains flexible and will adjust as needed. He added that he does not expect any abrupt changes in Taiwan’s relationship with the US.
