Taiwan’s US policy unchanged following Biden win: DPP lawmakers
Legislator Wang Ting-yu

DPP legislators say Taiwan’s policy toward the United States will stay the course following the election of former Vice President Joe Biden.

Lawmaker Lee Guei-min says that Biden faces bigger concerns than US-Taiwan ties. She says that the President-elect’s priority will be mending the domestic situation in the United States.

Lee says the American people have become increasingly divided during Donald Trump’s presidency. She says Trump sowed discord between the United States and the European Union. By comparison, she says, US-Taiwan ties do not demand immediate attention.

As for Trump’s lawsuits contesting the election results, Lee says it’s an indication of how unstable American society is right now. She says domestic chaos in the United States could have grave implications for the world as a whole.

Lee says that the US may revert back to an Obama-era Taiwan policy. She called on both Taiwan and China to exercise restraint and control while the US is in transition.

Meanwhile, DPP legislator Wang Ting-yu says that US-Taiwan relations are currently at a 40-year high. He says that momentum will carry through to a Biden presidency. However, Wang says that Taiwan must be mindful that different presidents may operate differently. He says that the government will observe how Biden handles Taiwan and adjust as needed.
