President Tsai Ing-wen has appointed leading business tycoon Morris Chang to attend this year’s APEC summit on her behalf. Chang is the founder of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest chipmaker by market capitalization.
This year’s APEC is set to kick off in Malaysia next Friday virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At a press conference held on Tuesday at the Presidential Office, President Tsai Ing-wen announced that she has appointed TSMC founder Morris Chang to attend this year’s Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit on her behalf.
This will be the fourth time that Chang has represented Taiwan at an APEC summit.
Chang’s wife was also present at the press conference.
This year’s APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting will be conducted virtually on November 20 in Malaysia. The theme for 2020 is “Optimising Human Potential Towards a Resilient Future of Shared Prosperity.”
Chang said he hopes to win more support for Taiwan during the event.
President Tsai gave the APEC delegation two missions: first, to convey that Taiwan is willing to contribute more to global pandemic prevention; second, to strengthen ties with other countries to boost Taiwan’s role in global supply chains.
Taiwan’s digital minister Audrey Tang has also been invited to participate in the APEC CEO dialogues on November 19.
