Beijing is concerned about how US President-elect Joe Biden will deal with Taiwan. This was apparent at a routine press conference held Wednesday morning by China's Taiwan Affairs Office.
The office's spokesperson, Zhu Fenglian, said he hopes that the US government will understand that the Taiwan issue is a highly sensitive one. Zhu said he hopes that the US will adhere to its one China principle and the Three Communiques signed between the US and China.
Zhu also said that Beijing opposes any military exchanges between the US and Taiwan. That was a response to news that US Marine Corps special operations forces came to Taiwan on November 9 to train Taiwan's Marines.
US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment Keith Krach is also scheduled to lead economic dialogue between Washington and Taiwanese officials beginning November 20. In regards to this dialogue, Zhu said that Beijing opposes any official exchanges between the US and the "Taiwan Region”.
