Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim, says that Taiwan maintains close ties with both the US Republican and Democratic parties. Hsiao was responding Thursday to reporters’ questions about whether she has spoken with US President-elect Joe Biden.
Hsiao said that contacts with both parties have continued smoothly, both before and after the recent US election. She said she hopes to see continued high levels of mutual trust and continued close ties with the US over the next few years.
Hsiao also addressed unease about Biden’s victory in some parts of Taiwanese society, which had approved of the Trump administration’s pro-Taiwan actions. Hsiao said that Taiwan’s government has long made friends with both major US political parties She said that both parties support Taiwan and applaud its democratization, the resilience of its economy, and its success in fighting COVID-19. She said she hopes all Taiwanese people will continue to back closer economic ties and security cooperation with the US, as well as cooperation with the US in international organizations.
