President Tsai Ing-wen is calling on the overseas Taiwanese community to help draw international attention to Taiwan. Her remarks came during a recorded address to the 2020 Commissioners’ Conference of Overseas Community Affairs Council. The meeting took place virtually on Monday morning with overseas Taiwanese representatives from all over the world in attendance.
Tsai said the overseas community should help resolve the current worldwide crisis, and take the opportunity to expand Taiwan’s economic footprint internationally. She says that the government has also established a fund to help relieve struggling Taiwanese enterprises abroad. Tsai said that although the COVID-19 pandemic presents challenges, it has also created many opportunities for international cooperation. She hopes overseas Taiwanese can participate in exchanges that will help shine a positive light on Taiwan.
The president said her administration’s New Southbound Policy has resulted in the signing of 70 memorandums meant to help bolster economic ties with its partners. She said she hopes overseas Taiwanese can help realize the full potential of those agreements in the areas of economic development, agriculture, and technology.
Tsai also spoke about how the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce of North America launched the “Select Taiwan” campaign in March to encourage consumers around the world to purchase Taiwanese products. The president said she hopes overseas Taiwanese can exert a positive influence and elevate Taiwan’s position in the world.
