President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday called US House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chair Eliot Engel to thank him for his long time support of Taiwan. Engel will see his term as US congressman end in January 2021.
Tsai thanked Engel on behalf of the Taiwan government for his staunch support of Taiwan. Tsai said Engel had visited Taiwan three times in the past and extended another invitation to the US congressman to visit Taiwan after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.
Tsai said Taiwan is very fortunate to have a friend like Engel and that his support made it possible for Taiwan to contribute to the world.
Engel responded by thanking Tsai for her leadership in strengthening Taiwan-US relations. Engel said Taiwan will always have friends in the US and that he is proud that he is part of that friendship. Engel had submitted the Taiwan Assurance Act in April last year calling for more US arms sales to Taiwan and support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
