A local plumber who lives in the central county of Changhua has a collection of over 200 glove puppets.
Plumber Huang Jing-ying loves glove puppetry and he enjoys performing the traditional art with his friend. Huang has collected over 200 puppets, which cost him over NT$2 million.
Huang has all kinds of puppets, such as sea dragon kings, Matsu, the Goddess of the Sea and other famous historical and mythical figures. Each one is beautifully-made and lifelike.
This puppet cost him about NT$20,000 (US$666). That’s because it was made with human hair.
Huang loved watching glove puppetry ever since he was young. He is all smiles when introducing his collection to visitors. The plumber is very knowledgeable about their history and costumes and loves to share his love of the art with visitors.
