Labor Minister: No timetable for labor insurance, pension reforms

Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun says that there is no timetable in place for introducing reforms to Taiwan’s labor insurance and pension systems.

Reforming Taiwan’s pension system to ensure its sustainability has been a particular goal of President Tsai Ing-wen’s administration. However, moves to alter the system in previous years have met with backlash from retired military personnel, teachers, and civil servants in particular.

Labor groups have been calling for public discussion sessions on pension and labor insurance reform across Taiwan. They are also calling for transparency about the state of the labor insurance system’s financial situation and assessments of proposed reforms.

A bill to reform the pension and labor insurance systems was expected to be presented at the end of the year, but work on the bill suddenly stopped in September.

On Wednesday, the labor minister repeated earlier comments from the labor ministry that there is no set schedule for reforms to the labor insurance and pension systems. She said that the labor ministry is still listening to various opinions on the issue, and that it will present a bill on reforming the two systems once such a bill is ready.
