OCAC head: Overseas community vital to Taiwan’s image
Overseas Community Affairs Council Minister Tung Chen-yuan

Head of Taiwan’s Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Tung Chen-yuan says overseas Taiwanese are vital to helping Taiwan succeed abroad. Tung’s remarks came during an interview with Radio Taiwan International which aired Tuesday morning.

Tung is Taiwan’s former Representative to Thailand. He said a lot of his work in Thailand was made possible by the Taiwanese community there.

The OCAC held its 2020 Commissioners’ Conference virtually last week. Tung says Taiwanese from all over the world attended the event. He says both President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President William Lai gave virtual addresses, which indicated the importance the current administration places on the overseas community.

Tung says that the 2020 Commissioners’ Conference was a success for four major reasons. First, the OCAC was able to come together via a new format by utilizing technology. Second, the OCAC was able to congregate and give input into areas like education, industry, investment, and healthcare. Third, the OCAC was able to have meaningful exchanges with other government agencies. Finally, overseas Taiwanese living in different areas could share how they came together during the pandemic and help spread awareness about Taiwan’s efforts in containing the pandemic.
