Irene Chung, a Malaysian student who studied at Chang Jung Christian University in Southern Taiwan’s Tainan City, was murdered in Taiwan last month. Chung’s parents are now taking legal action against the Taiwanese government.
Chung’s mother and father are seeking compensation from the Taiwanese government. In addition, they want Chung’s murderer to face the death penalty. If the perpatrator does not receive the death penalty, then Chung’s parents demand that he be exdtradited and tried in Malaysia.
Mayor of Tainan Huang Wei-cher says the city government is aware that Chung’s family wants national compensation. He says the Tainan City Government is willing to help them apply for remuneration.
In response to the death penalty request, Huang says that the justice system can’t take personal feelings into account. The judiciary must penalize heinous actions, but must do so in a manner that is consistent with the rules and expectations of society.
Premier Su Tseng-chang says crimes committed in Taiwan will not go unpunished. He said, however, punishments cannot supersede the bounds of the law.
