President Tsai Ing-wen is seeking support from the UK in Taiwan’s bid to join the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) next year. Tsai was speaking Tuesday while meeting with departing British Office Taipei Representative Catherine Nettleton.

Nettleton took office in late 2016. She will step down this month.

Next year’s UNFCCC will be held in the UK. Tsai said she hopes that Britain will support Taiwan’s bid so the two sides can continue strengthening cooperation in energy transformation.

Tsai said she supported British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s views that green energy and economic development can go hand in hand. In recent years,  the two sides have worked together in the joint development of off-shore wind energy.

Tsai thanked Nettleton’s assistance in helping Taiwan and the UK set up Taiwan’s first wind energy training center last September. Tsai said that highlights how Taiwan is playing a leading role in offshore wind power development in Asia.
