VIDEO: Sudden drop in temperature could trigger acute coronary syndrome

A sudden drop in temperature could trigger acute coronary syndrome, a disease that includes unstable angina pectoris and acute myocardial infarction.

A Taiwanese doctor urges the public to stay warm in the wintertime and watch out for symptoms such as chest pains, sweating and nausea.

It’s getting colder and colder each day. Recently, a plumber and electrician in his 30s was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction after complaining of shortness of breath and severe chest pains.

Dr. Chen Bo-nien, a neurologist, says cardiovascular diseases are most likely to happen in winter as they could be triggered by a sudden drop in temperature.

Besides weather changes, the disease can also be triggered by anxiety,  exercise or after having a big meal.

The symptoms include chest tightness, a sense of suppression in the chest, sweating, and nausea. Those with high blood pressure, high blood sugar and cholesterol levels are particularly at risk.

Dr. Chen urged the public to keep warm and seek medical care right away should those symptoms develop. They should also stop exercising immediately. Paula Chao, RTI news.
