Taiwanese to take Norway nationality row to human rights court
A group of Taiwanese citizens residing in Norway plans to take a case involving their designation on Norwegian documents to the European Court of Human Rights.

A group of Taiwanese citizens residing in Norway plans to take a case involving their designation on Norwegian documents to the European Court of Human Rights.

Norway’s Supreme Court recently rejected an appeal from the group to change their nationality, as listed on their residency permits, from “China” to “Taiwan”. Norwegian authorities began counting Taiwanese citizens as “Chinese” in 2010. Taiwan’s Central News Agency reports that the move was likely an attempt to appease China after Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize that year.

The foreign ministry says that it backs plans to bring the case to the European Court of Human Rights.
