The 2021 Taiwan Lantern Festival is set to open in the northern city of Hsinchu in late February.
Unlike previous events, the festival has many hi-tech features as it beautifully blends bamboo art with mechanical art installations. It also showcases glass work to pay tribute to the city’s glass industry.
The theme lantern for the upcoming Lantern Festival was unveiled this week. The Lantern Festival will be held in Hsinchu from February 26 to March 7.
The lantern’s theme is “Pursuing light while riding on the wind”, a nod to Hsinchu’s nickname, the Windy City.
Hsinchu Mayor Lin Chih-chien said the event is futuristic as it enables viewers to enjoy a fusion of technology, art and fashion.
Transportation Minster Lin Chia-lung said Hsinchu, the heart of Taiwan’s hi-tech industry, is perfect for the festival as it fuses light art with optical technology.
The theme lantern was designed and built by LuxuryLogico and consists of 108 bamboo sticks. They flow with the wind through a mechanical apparatus. During the day, the 15-meter tall lantern is a bamboo art installation while at night, it becomes a spectacular light show.
