US House passes defense spending bill with pro-Taiwan measures
The US House of Representatives has passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, a defense spending bill that includes a number of pro-Taiwan measures.

The US House of Representatives has passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, a defense spending bill that includes a number of pro-Taiwan measures.

The act reaffirms the two bases of US-Taiwan ties, the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act and the Reagan-era “Six Assurances”. The act also supports joint military exercises and military training with Taiwan. It encourages more exchanges between high level US and Taiwan officials in line with the 2018 Taiwan Travel Act.

In addition, the act supports the establishment of a US-Taiwan medical partnership. It also encourages the US to help ensure that Taiwanese citizens are not unfairly excluded from employment opportunities at international financial organizations.

The foreign ministry says that the US Senate is expected to put the act onto its agenda before the end of the year. The ministry says it is closely watching deliberations about the act in the US Congress.
