President Tsai Ing-wen was in Kaohsiung on Friday morning to preside over a commissioning ceremony for three naval ships. During the ceremony, Tsai said the ships are faster and have better capabilities than other vessels in their respective classes.
The president said that the Anping-class offshore vessel in particular can swiftly be equipped for battle if necessary. She said that the three ships represent an improvement in Taiwan’s defense capabilities.
Tsai said the new ships have been built as part of a ten-year plan to add 100 vessels to Taiwan’s naval fleet. All of the ships produced under the program are to be built domestically. Tsai said that those built already have performed excellently. She also said that the shipbuilding program is progressing ahead of schedule.
The president said that the program will bring new upgrades and innovations to Taiwan’s shipbuilding industry.
