Taiwan's flag carrier airline, China Airlines (CAL), unveiled on Monday a new Boeing 777 cargo jet, which highlights the image of Taiwan on its fuselage. There have been calls to highlight the Taiwanese identity of the airline as people in other countries have mistaken it for a Chinese airline.
The new image has the shape of Taiwan integrated into the capital letter "C" of the word "cargo". The airline’s name is also much smaller and located near the tail of the plane.
Earlier this year, there were calls in the legislature for the airline to change its name. In July, the Legislature passed a resolution that asked the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to highlight "Taiwan" on CAL planes, in a way that does not adversely impact Taiwan's freedom of the air privileges.
China Airlines has ordered six of the cargo jets. CAL said it plans to use the 777 freighters mainly on its Asian and North American routes and replace some of its older 747-400s.
