Taiwan to get COVID-19 vaccines through COVAX: Official

Taiwan should be able to get COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX global vaccine allocation plan. That’s the word from Central Epidemic Control Center (CECC) spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang on Tuesday.

COVAX has offered three types of COVID-19 vaccines for Taiwan to choose from. These include the one jointly produced by Pfizer and BioNtech and those made by AstraZeneca and Sanofi. Sanofi, however, has yet to complete its Phase 3 clinical trial.

Chuang said the government is planning to purchase 30 million vaccines though it may not get all of them at once. If each person gets two shots, about 15 million people, or 65% of the population, will get vaccinated. That means Taiwan may be able to reach herd immunity.

Chuang said medical care workers, the military and police, people over 65, and those aged between 50 and 64 will have priority access to the vaccines.
