Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim, has repeated calls for the US and Taiwan to sign an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation.
During a virtual forum on the future of US-Taiwan relations Thursday, Hsiao said that bilateral investment is an important part of US-Taiwan economic ties. However, she said that companies are less attracted to invest across borders when they are taxed by governments on both sides. She said that while Taiwan has agreement to avoid double taxation with countries such as Canada, it does not yet have such an agreement with the US.
She said companies in both the US and Taiwan have expressed concern about the issue of double taxation. She said that Taiwan hopes to open discussions with the US on an agreement to avoid taxing companies twice for their international investments.
Hsiao also reiterated her hope that talks on a US-Taiwan bilateral trade agreement will move forward.
