Video: Yunlin town creates giant maze from bales of rice straw

Taiwan’s premier rice producing town has found a creative way to tackle an excess of rice straw. Using giant bales of straw, it’s constructed a labyrinth that even the most dedicated of maze aficionados may find challenging.

Yunlin County’s Dapi Township produces more rice than anywhere else in Taiwan. Over 3,600 square meters are planted with rice paddies.

But for all the rice the area produces, it produces even more rice straw, straw that locals used to dispose of by burning. Now, though, the township has come up with a more eco-friendly use for all this leftover straw: a gigantic maze.

1.2 meter-high bales of straw are now stacked up into a labyrinth stretching over more than 2,200 square meters. Try getting out of that one. The maze is set to open to the public on December 26. Don’t get lost!
