President Tsai Ing-wen has expressed her concerns over hurricane damage in the Central American country of Honduras. The country, which maintains full diplomatic ties with Taiwan, was devastated by two hurricanes last month.
During a phone call with Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández on Thursday, Tsai said she hopes that the nation’s people will be able to return to normalcy as soon as possible. Tsai also said ties between Taiwan and Honduras remain firm.
Meanwhile, Taiwan has provided Belize, another of its Central American allies, with assistance in the field of disaster prevention technology. This is the first time that Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund has included disaster prevention in its foreign aid project.
The fund said on Thursday that it has worked with Belize to promote a “Smart City Technology Solution.” This includes an early warning system that gave residents of the city of San Ignacio three hours to evacuate when a hurricane hit the county last month.
With the system in place, the city only suffered minor losses following three days of heavy rain triggered by the hurricane.
