Taiwan is in the middle of a sudden cold snap, and it isn’t just humans feeling the chill. The zoo in the southern city of Kaohsiung is taking steps to make sure that its animals stay warm as the mercury continues to drop.
Since early Wednesday, temperatures across Taiwan have fallen sharply. That’s not a problem if you’re a human- just put on a coat. But what if you’re cold-blooded like a tortoise, or build for steamy jungles like a sloth? The directors of Kaohsiung’s Shoushan Zoo have considered these questions, and they’ve come up with answers.
A range of animals and birds susceptible to the cold have been given heat lamps, while orangutans have been given canvas blankets. The zoo says that it will also take steps to warm up its furrier and bulkier residents, creatures like lions and elephants, as necessary.
