A commercial Taiwanese fishing boat that went missing last week has been located about 527 nautical miles northeast of the Midway Islands. There were no signs of its 10-person crew.
The Su'ao Fishermen's Association said a boat has been sent to search for the crew but because of the huge waves and winds, the earliest it could reach the boat would be in 12 hours. They hope to board the boat to see if the crew may be hiding in the cabin.
The owner of Yong Yu Sing No. 18 reported on January 1 that he lost contact with the captain on December 30. The captain had a crew of 9 Indonesian fishermen aboard with him.
The National Rescue Command Center sought help from U.S. authorities, and an American search and rescue aircraft found the boat on January 2.
The windows of the captain's cabin have been smashed open, which means the communications equipment onboard may have been damaged. No distress calls were received from the boat before its disappearance.
