The Central Epidemic Command Center said Thursday that one patient previously confirmed to have COVID-19 has contracted a mutated variant of the COVID-19 coronavirus. This brings the total number of cases of the new strain Taiwan has recorded so far up to five.

The patient arrived in Taiwan December 30 and his infection was confirmed the following day while in quarantine.

The Central Epidemic Command Center has completed a review of tests by all arrivals between December 13 and 22 with a history of travel to the UK. Four have tested positive for the new strain, 220 have tested negative, and the results from two more are still pending.

The center also reported three new cases from abroad on Thursday. The patients come from Taiwan, the Philippines and Indonesia, respectively.
