A group of Taiwanese lawmakers has called for urgent legislation after Hong Kong police arrested over 50 people under a controversial National Security Law that covers the territory.
The New Power Party Legislative Caucus said an upcoming legislative session should be used to strengthen protections for Hong Kong citizens. It also said that the Legislature should ban high-ranking Hong Kong officials from entering Taiwan and freeze their assets.
Hong Kong police arrested more than 50 people on Wednesday on suspicion of violating a controversial National Security Law. Authorities accuse the detainees of ‘subverting state power’, among other crimes.
Hong Kong dissident Lam Wing-kee also called on the government to let more Hong Kong citizens enter Taiwan. He said that once China has control over Hong Kong, it will turn its focus to Taiwan.
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council says current legislation is already sufficient to protect the rights of people from Hong Kong.
