The COVID-19 pandemic has given Taiwan the opportunity to improve its tourism industry. That’s according to Minister Chang Jing-sen on Monday.
Chang’s comments came during a two-day forum organized by the tourism bureau to discuss the post-pandemic transformation of the domestic tourism industry.
Chang says there’s much to improve upon, including crowded scenic spots, heavy traffic, and sub-standard restrooms.
Traditionally, Taiwanese tourists have preferred to travel overseas, when there is an option. Chang says the only way to attract both Taiwanese tourists and foreign tourists is if Taiwan takes the opportunity to improve the quality of the tourism industry.
People in Taiwan have been engaging in what’s known as “revenge tourism” during the pandemic. Unable to go abroad, they’re traveling locally, and with a vengeance.
Chang says it will be a huge challenge for the government if the trends reverse after the pandemic, and “revenge tourism” sends Taiwanese tourists overseas in droves.
