Foreign Minister Joseph Wu is in the Pacific island nation of Palau for the inauguration of the country’s new president and the swearing in of its newest lawmakers. Palau is one of Taiwan’s 15 diplomatic allies.
Wu will meet with Palau’s outgoing president, Tommy Remengesau, Jr. on Wednesday. Then, on Wednesday evening, he is scheduled to attend a banquet at which both Remengesau and Palauan President-elect Surangel Whipps, Jr. will be present.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Thursday morning. On Thursday, Wu will meet with the newly sworn-in president and vice president of Palau as well as the new heads of the country’s House of Delegates and Senate.
Later on Thursday, Wu will travel to the Palauan state of Ngaraard. There, he will attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new community center built with Taiwanese support.
Wu is being accompanied by a group representing Taiwanese tour operators, who will visit popular tourist sites in Palau and assess the possibility of a Taiwan-Palau COVID-19 travel bubble.
