The foreign ministry says that the attendance of Taiwan’s representative to the US, Hsiao Bi-khim, at US President Joe Biden’s inauguration is significant. This is the first time that a Taiwanese envoy to the US has been formally invited to attend a US presidential inauguration since 1979.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou said that the invitation signals the friendly state of ties between the two countries.
In a video Hsiao posted at the inauguration, Hsiao said “democracy is our common language and freedom is our common objective.” She said she looks forward to working with the Biden administration in advancing mutual values and interests.
