The Democratic Progressive Party says it is looking forward to closer US-Taiwan cooperation under the new Biden administration. That came after the party officially congratulated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their inauguration as US President and Vice-President.
The party says that remarks made by incoming US Secretary of State Antony Blinken bode well for future cooperation between the two countries. During his confirmation hearing, Blinken said the US had a ‘longstanding commitment’ to defending Taiwan. He also said he wanted to see ‘Taiwan even more engaged in the world’.
The party also noted Taiwan Representative to the US Hsiao Bi-Khim’s attendance at the inauguration ceremony. Hsiao became the first Taiwanese representative to receive a formal invitation to the event since the US broke off relations with Taiwan in 1979. The party said the move was testament to the hard work of frontline diplomats and the Taiwanese people.
