Foreign Minister Joseph Wu has attended the inauguration of Surangel Whipps, Jr., the new president of the Pacific Island nation of Palau. Palau is one of Taiwan’s 15 diplomatic allies.
The inauguration took place Thursday. That same day, Wu also attended the swearing in of the new heads of Palau’s House of Delegates and Senate.
Afterwards, he traveled to the Palauan state of Ngaraard. There, he attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a community center that was rebuilt with Taiwanese support after being destroyed in a super-typhoon.
Wu is being accompanied by a group representing Taiwanese tour operators, who will visit popular tourist sites in Palau and assess the possibility of a Taiwan-Palau COVID-19 travel bubble. The contingent is expected to visit Palau’s scenic Rock Islands on Saturday.
